The annual squirrel count takes place on the first three Saturdays in October.  The count was started by John Stencel in 1977.  Approximately 40 volunteers are needed each week to canvas the town.  Each counter is given a map of the area they will walk and detail what they see in regards to white squirrels, gray squirrels, fox squirrels and cats.  It takes approximately 1 1/2 hours to cover each area.  Once the counter finishes their assigned area, they return to the Community Building in the Olney City Park to tally their results.  Refreshments will be available for the counters.  A wide variety of people volunteer each year from students from the local junior college to seniors who enjoy a fall morning walk.  The count has become a very popular weekend getaway for out of town visitors.  If you are interested in participating in the next count, please contact Kelsie Sterchi at [email protected] or call 618-395-7302 x3.
