Simply put, this year is a big one for the Du Quoin State Fair. It is always one of the largest events in Southern Illinois, and this year it’s amplified because the Du Quoin State Fair is celebrating its 100th Anniversary. The Fair attracts 300,000 people each year and has played host to a WIDE variety of events and musical talent. Everyone from Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash to Nelly and REO Speedwagon have played for the crowds here in Du Quoin. As we look forward to this year’s momentous occasion, we did a little question and answer session with Du Quoin State Fair Manager, Josh Gross.
Downstate Illinois:
Can you tell us a little about what folks can expect from the DQ State Fair this year?
Josh Gross:
We are hoping to provide a great atmosphere for our fairgoers in 2022. This begins with our new carnival partner North American Midway who brings new and exciting rides along with some nice food additions to the fair. We also have brought in some exciting new free entertainment along with some old favorites to try and provide something for everyone.
Downstate Illinois:
It’s the 100th Anniversary of the Fair, explain how big of a milestone that is and how you folks plan on celebrating that?
Josh Gross:
Obviously anytime you celebrate a 100th anniversary it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity so the staff on the fairgrounds are extremely excited to be a part of such a milestone. We are trying to celebrate many of the historical events that have come through the fair over the last 100 years. I don’t want to give too many things away but I can tell you that we are excited to increase the amount of free entertainment we have brought to the grounds.
Downstate Illinois:
There are some improvements going on at the Fairgrounds as we speak. What are they, and how will they improve the visitor experience?
Josh Gross:
Yes, fairgoers in 2022 will be able to see the new renovations taking place on the grounds beginning with our Grandstand. We are repainting, repairing mortar, resurfacing the stage, and turning back on the historic neon lights. We are also working on improving the front entrance way and a number of smaller structures throughout the grounds. All of that combined with some new featured areas and some improvements to our beautiful fairgrounds.
Downstate Illinois:
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Josh Gross:
I am just excited to invite everyone out to the fair and I look forward to helping create memories to celebrate over our next 100 years.
