Did you know that southern Illinois has a native cactus? It’s true! The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia cespitosa) is found in the sandy soils along the Mississippi River. Our newest preserve, Knoll Family Wildlife Sanctuary in Edwardsville, has a HUGE population of these plants. They tend to bloom in late May – July. We hope that peak cactus bloom time will be happening during this walk on June 6.
